In xxxx, the barn was sold by Ernie and Hattie Walk to Joyce and Kurt Anderson who retained George Babcock of Pittsfield MA to dismantle the barn and transport the barn members to Bullock Road n the town of New Scotland, N.Y. Subsequently, the original dry laid stone foundation was transported to Bullock Road and re-laid to provide the foundation for the restored barn. During the summer of xxxx, all structural members were pressure washed, treated with a borate preservative and repaired where needed. The barn was reassembled in September, new hemlock siding was applied, expanded windows were added and metal roofing placed to make the barn weather-tight. In xxxx, after the hemlock siding was dry; two coats of red barn paint were applied. Also that year, the cupola was designed by the Andersons and fabricated by John of North Granville N.Y. Richard Babcock, George's father, who is a noted author and historian of old barns in the northeast, assisted his son in dismantling this barn and identified the barn as a good example of a German style barn common in the Hudson, Mohawk and Schoharie valleys of N.Y. The beams are all hand hewn and are hemlock. Richard, when asked, estimated that the barn was built during the period of between the Revolutionary war and xxxx. He said that he couldn't be more precise without doing historic ownership research of town and county records and even then it may not be possible to ascertain the age since often there is no mention of barns on a property, only a house. He said that he based his estimate on the hand wrought nails, the joinery and that all the structural members were hand hewn. The middle of the barn had a wooden threshing floor between the large doors and was used to hand thresh grain with flails. Separating the grain from the chaff was done on a windy day with both barn doors open. The wooden floor was elevated on 2 foot high stone pillars that supported 4 large 30 ft. beams flattened on one side with the floor planks placed upon them. The threshing floor planks were reused in the restored barn as the flooring for the loft in the north end of the barn. The barn has 100 amp electric service.
